Souvla is steeped in flavour, and originates from Greece so it gives you the best of Greek and Cypriot cuisines. It contains small pieces of pork, lamb chicken or beef and goes perfectly with grilled pitta bread, fresh salad and light sauces. However, if you’re a vegetarian or prefer not to eat, then halloumi, mushroom and fish can still allow you to thoroughly enjoy this dish.




Kleftico epitomizes traditional and warm flavours, as it is comprised of juicy lamb or tender mutton, locally grown vegetables, cinnamon and lemon juice, and is then left to bake in a clay oven for a minimum of 24 hours. Cypriots also tend to bake the pieces of meat with various cheeses wrapped in phyllo, but either way, you’re sure to fall in love with kleftico.




Moussaka is a dish that is loved all around the world; minced meat is combined with aubergine, tomatoes and various other spices, vegetables and herbs to create a gorgeous dish. Cyprus Traditional food: Starters and Deserts




Cypriots also love their complimentary dishes, and one of those is a traditional meze platter, consisting of a variety of small dishes which are served both hot or cold. Taverns typically serve Tahini, a traditional sauce, or Saganaki, a traditional fried cheese, along with the platter to provide extra flavours and textures. Additionally, you can choose to have something more substantial with the small dishes, such as grilled octopus or small slices of pork.





These are perfect to finish a night of eating; deep fried dough balls are soaked in honey and coated generously in crushed nuts, cinnamon, and sesame seeds, resulting in a mouth-watering dessert. Loukoumades, also known as Lokma, are tremendously sweet and can be found anywhere around Cyprus, especially coffee shops.



Halloumi is a cheese that has spread all over the globe due its intense flavour and fantastic versatility. Halloumi is produced by combining a mixture of goat and sheep’s milk and boasts of a high melting point which makes it incredibly simple to grill or fry. This ingredient can be used as the main aspect in a dish or can also compliment other ingredients such as a meat or fish.


Ekmek Kadayifi


Ekmek Kadayifi is one of most popular desserts throughout the whole of Cyprus and resembles a syrup-soaked sponge, but it is much more than that. It is usually served with kaymak, which is a force of clotted cream, and this enhances the bread pudding a significant amount.
